Orvis was founded in 1856 it was to outfit wealthy patrons visiting Manchester Vermont’s famed health spa (it's not like the Manchester of Coronation Street!).

Orvis initially provided these people with handcrafted fly rods, and even mailed them to some customers. Orvis thus became the oldest mail order company in America and an institution as far as the country sportsman is concerned. The Orvis UK operation has gone from strength to strength since it first started in a converted mill in the village of Nether Wallop (don't laugh).
