Plants as Gifts
Plants might seem to be the obvious gift
for a gardener, but gardeners do tend to be a capricious lot when it
comes to which varieties are allowed to grace their soil. I therefore tend
to steer clear of garden plants unless you
are very certain exactly what plant is wanted and the right size and variety.
Try doing some surreptitious scouting,
asking questions when you see the person you're going to buy a gift for
- flattering them into giving you some "expert advice" can be a fruitful
approach as can asking their partner.
A beautiful and / or fragrant houseplant
on the other hand always goes down well. Something that is alive, vibrant
and growing strongly also makes a nice addition to all the cut foliage that
is around. At the simplest a bowl of bulbs, Hyacinth or Narcissi, or more
exotically, an indoor Stephanotis, Jasmine or Scented Orchid is bound to
please.
Containerised plants also give an extra flexibility that those
intended for planting straight into the soil don't have. A specimen plant
in a well matched container could be the perfect solution. If your recipient
doesn't like it the way it is, they can separate the two and have two presents
that any gardener would be very pleased to use in their garden.
