Shrub - O

Oleaster  £14.95

Lustrous, dark green leaves with silvery undersides and fragrant, creamy-white autumn flowers. This versatile, shade-tolerant, evergreen shrub is equally at home in the shrub border or grown as an informal hedge. The plain green foliage is an excellent foil for ornamental or feature plants and for screening or linking areas of the garden. Position:   full sun or partial shade. Soil:  fertile, well-drained soil. Rate of growth:  average to fast-growing Flowering period:  October and November Flower colour:  creamy-white. Other features:  tolerates dry soil and salt-laden coastal winds. Hardiness:  fully hardy. Garden care:  To keep hedging specimens tidy in late summer cut back long or misplaced shoots using secateurs. Remove any plain green-leaved shoots as soon as they appear, cutting them back to the originGoes well with:  Choisya ternata, Garrya elliptica, Sarcococca confusa, Hedera hibernica 'Sagittifolia', Geranium macrorrhizum 'Album', Galanthus nivalis

Olive tree  £9.95

Position:   full sunSoil:  deep, fertile, sharply drained soil (or loam-based potting compost for container-grown specimens) Rate of growth:  slow-growing Flowering period:  June to August. Hardiness:  frost hardy (needs winter protection in cold areas) As our climate gets milder, the popularity of olive trees continues to grow. The pointed, grey-green, leathery leaves are retained all year. In hot summers, the tiny, fragrant, creamy-white flowers are followed by edible, green fruits. As it matures the tree takes on a distinctive, gnarled shape, which makes it an excellent focal point for a sunny, sheltered wall and in frost-prone areas is best grown in a large container under glass. Garden care:  To protect against wind damage stake using a low angled stake, driven into the ground on the windward side at a 45 angle. Water regularly during dry periods, keeping the planting area weed-free. Apply a top-dressing of a nitrogen-rich general purpose fertiliser twice or three times each year during the growing season.

Olive Tree - 1/2 Standard  £24.95

Position:   full sunSoil:  deep, fertile, sharply drained soil (or loam-based potting compost for container-grown specimens) Rate of growth:  slow-growing Flowering period:  June to August. Hardiness:  frost hardy (needs winter protection in cold areas) As our climate gets milder, the popularity of olive trees continues to grow. Olives respond particularly well to pruning, and they look elegant and modern grown as standards with a long, clear stem. The leaves are pointed, grey-green and leathery and are retained all year. Tiny, fragrant, creamy-white flowers are followed in hot summers by edible, green fruits. Olive trees make excellent specimens for a sunny, Mediterranean-style garden, or try this standard in a large pot to frame an entrance or terrace. In milder winters it can be left outdoors in a sheltered spot, otherwise, it will need to be overwintered under glass. Garden care:  To protect against wind damage stake using a low angled stake, driven into the ground on the windward side at a 45 angle. Water regularly during dry periods, keeping the planting area weed-free. Apply a top-dressing of a nitrogen-rich general purpose fertiliser twice or three times each year during the growing season.Size Guide: Standard plants have a 40-45cm clear stem with a 30-35cm diameter head

Osmanthus  £7.95

Position:   full sun or partial shade. Soil:  fertile, well-drained soil. Rate of growth:  average. Flowering period:  April and May. Hardiness:  fully hardy. This popular, rounded, evergreen shrub has glossy, finely toothed, dark green leaves beautifully offset by highly scented, jasmine like, white flowers in mid and late spring. In flower, it will light up a shady corner of the garden and as an evergreen, makes a lovely foil for other flowering plants and ferns. Garden care:  Minimal pruning is required. Remove misplaced, dead or diseased branches in late spring and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in)  mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.

Osmanthus  £7.95

Position:   full sun or partial shade. Soil:  fertile, well-drained soil. Rate of growth:  slow-growing. Flowering period:  April and May. Hardiness:  fully hardy. Masses of scented, white, jasmine-like flowers appear on arching branches in mid and late spring among glossy, dark grey-green leaves with finely serrated edges. This rounded, bushy, evergreen shrub thrives on well-drained soil in dappled shade. To enjoy the fragrant flowers, plant near an entrance or well-used path. Garden care:  Minimal pruning is required. Remove misplaced, dead or diseased branches in late spring and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in)  mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. Goes well with:  Myrtus communis, Choisya ternata 'Aztec Pearl', Deutzia x magnifica, Sarcococca confusa, Clematis viticella 'Purpurea Plena Elegans', Galanthus nivalis

Oval Leaf Privet  £6.95

Position:   full sun or partial shade. Soil:  any well-drained soil. Rate of growth:  fast-growing Flowering period:  July and August. Hardiness:  fully hardy. This vigorous, oval leaf privet makes a crisp, pollution-tolerant hedge for an urban or surburban site. The small, oval, bright green leaves provide dense cover, and clusters of white flowers appear in July and August followed by shiny, spherical, black fruit. Thriving in sun or shade, the lustrous, dark green foliage provides an evergreen backdrop for ornamental and feature plants. If grown as a hedge and kept pruned, it is unlikely to flower. Garden care:  Plants grown as free-standing specimens require minimal pruning - where necessary remove any misplaced or diseased branches in late-winter or early spring. Trim hedging plants twice yearly - in May and August. After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in)  mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant. Goes well with:  Berberis thunbergii 'Aurea', Choisya ternata, Cotinus coggygria 'Purpureus', Euphorbia palustris, Eranthis hyemalis, Narcissus 'February Gold'.
