It makes an excellent shrub for all styles of gardens and has the added bonus of having blackish-red berries in autumn which are attractive to birds. Garden care:  To achieve the best foliage effect cut back to ground level each year in early spring and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in)  mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. Goes well with:  Salix alba var vitellina, Trollius europaeus, Primula florindae, Carex elata 'Aurea', Juncus effusus f. 'Spiralis', Hosta sieboldiana var. elegans

Black Elder (syn. Black Beauty)  £8.95

Other features:  purple black autumn fruits are attractive to birds. Hardiness:  fully hardy. Darker than other varieties it makes an excellent ornamental plant for a site in sun or partial shade. As an added bonus the purple black autumn fruits are highly attractive to songbirds. Garden care:  To achieve the best foliage effect cut back to ground level each year in early spring and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in)  mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. Elder  £8.45

Position:   full sun or partial shade. Soil:  moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil. Rate of Growth:  average to fast. Flowering period:  April. Flowers:  creamy yellow. Other features:  spherical, glossy red berries. Hardiness:  fully hardy. Conical clusters of creamy yellow flowers in mid spring, followed by glossy, red fruits and deeply cut, bronze young leaves, turning golden yellow. This bushy, deciduous shrub with arching shoots makes a stunning specimen plant for a moist, well-drained border. The delicate foliage is less susceptible to sun-scorch than other golden, cut leaved varieties. Garden care:  To achieve the best foliage effect cut back to ground level each year in early spring and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in)  mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.

Enkianthus  £10.95

Position:   full sun or partial shade. Soil:  moist, well-drained acid to neutral soil. Rate of growth:  average. Flowering period:  May to June. Hardiness:  fully hardy. Renowned for its autumn colour, this spreading shrub actually has two seasons of interest. In early summer it produces clusters of delicate, bell-shaped, cream to pink flowers with darker pink margins. In autumn, the oval, mid green leaves turn flaming shades of orange and red. This pretty shrub is perfect for a shady, woodland edge and gives its most brilliant autumn display on acid soil. Garden care:  Apply a thick 5-7cm (2-3in)  mulch of peat or well-rotted leafmould around the base of the plant in spring. Little pruning is needed. Simply remove dead and diseased wood and branches that are crossing after the plant has flowered.

Escallonia  £6.95

Position:   full sunSoil:  fertile, well-drained soil. Rate of growth:  average Flowering period:  June to September. Hardiness:  fully hardy. Clusters of fragrant, pure white flowers from June to September among small, lustrous, dark green leaves, often bronze-tinted in cold weather. This upright, evergreen shrub prefers a sheltered, sunny site with fertile, well-drained soil. To fully appreciate the wonderfully scented flowers, it's best grown in a border close to an entrance or path. Garden care:  Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering. In mid or late spring lightly cut back any shoots that spoil the symmetry of the plant. After pruning apply a generous 5-7 cm (2-3in)  mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. Goes well with:  Viburnum tinus 'Eve Price', Choisya ternata, Magnolia stellata 'Royal Star', Myrtus communis, Itea ilicifolia, Galanthus nivalis
