Valerian  £5.45

Position:   full sunSoil:  well-drained, neutral to alkaline. Rate of growth:  fast-growing. Flowering period:  May to October. Hardiness:  fully hardy. Airy clusters of white flowers appear from July to October on tall, fleshy stems with glaucous leaves. This white form of red valerian is long flowering and easy-to-grow and combines well with many different plants. It's ideal for a sunny wildflower or seaside garden with poor, but well-drained soil, or for growing between the cracks in walls. It self-seeds freely and prefers a chalky or alkaline soil. Garden care:  Deadhead regularly through. out the summer to prolong flowering. In autumn cut the plant back down to the ground and compost the dead stems.

Valerie Finnis Artemisia  £5.45

Position:   full sunSoil:  well-drained, fertile soil. Rate of growth:  average Flowering period:  August to September. Hardiness:  fully hardy. Artemisias are prized for their light, almost silver, aromatic foliage rather than for their flowers, which are dull and insignificant. This cultivar has long, pointed, notched leaves and forms a upright, natural mound. Once established, it can also cope with drought. It makes a great edging plant for a sunny border, or as part of a Mediterranean scheme, with other silver-leaved plants. The aromatic foliage can also be used in dried flower arrangements. Garden care:  Cut back stems back to ground-level in autumn and apply a generous mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.

Verbena  £5.45

Position:   full sunSoil:  moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Rate of growth:  average to fast-growing. Flowering period:  June to September. Hardiness:  borderline hardy. Tightly packed clusters of lilac-purple flowers on tall, stiff, branching stems from June to September. This stylish perennial has been enjoying a resurgence of interest in recent years. Perfect for a sheltered, sunny, well-drained spot, its open, transparent shape means that it can easily be used at the front or middle of the border despite its height. Garden care:  In cold conditions Verbena bonariensis can suffer dieback if cut back in autumn, so it's best to leave the plant until spring and cut back the old growth when you see the new shoots emerging at the base. Also it's a good idea to mulch around the base of the plant with a deep, dry mulch in winter to help protect the plant. Where the plant is grown in partial shade the stems may need to be supported - if this is necessary use natural materials such as brushwood or twiggy pea-sticks.

Verbena  £5.95

Position:   full sunSoil:  moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Rate of growth:  average to fast-growing Flowering period:  June to September Flower colour:  bright purple or magentaOther features:  self-seeds freely; toothed, dark green leaves; highly attractive to butterflies and bees. Hardiness:  frost hardy (needs winter protection) A neat, low-growing verbena producing lax clusters of fragrant, bright purple or magenta flowers from June to September. This jewel-like perennial is perfect for a sheltered, sunny, well-drained spot. Associating well with grey and silver-leaved plants, it's wonderful used in generous drifts for infilling a traditional knot garden. Garden care:  In areas prone to frost apply a deep, dry winter mulch around the crown of the plant.

Verbena  £5.95

Position:   full sunSoil:  moist, well-drained soil. Rate of growth:  average Flowering period:  June to September Flower colour:  mid-pink. Hardiness:  hardy. Dark purple spikes opening to mid-pink flowers are produced from midsummer through.  to autumn on compact flowerheads. This is an upright verbena that looks stunning planted with dark purples and blues, like Veronica spicata 'Glory'. Great for the middle of a sunny garden border. Garden care:  Protect plants in winter with a dry winter mulch around the crown.

Verbena  £5.95

Pretty pink flowers are produced from midsummer through.  to autumn on compact flowerheads. This is an upright verbena that looks like Verbena bonariensis but only grows to the same height as Verbena rigida. Looks lovely planted in pots on the patio or in a sunny spot at the front of the garden border. Position:   full sunSoil:  moist, well-drained soil. Rate of growth:  average Flowering period:  June to September Flower colour:  pink. Hardiness:  fully hardy. Garden care:  Protect plants in winter with a dry winter mulch around the crown

Verbena  £5.95

Position:   full sunSoil:  moist, well-drained soil. Rate of growth:  average Flowering period:  June to September Flower colour:  claret. Hardiness:  half hardy. Dark claret flowers are produced all summer above feathery, dark green foliage. A lovely plant that looks great in a 'hot' border where it associates really well with yellow and orange flowering plants, such as Crocosmia 'Ge. Orge Davison' and Dahlia 'Arabian Night'. It also looks lovely planted in pots on a sunny patio. Garden care:  Protect plants in winter with a dry winter mulch around the crown.

Viola (syn. Viola Boughton Blue)  £4.95

Position:   full sun or partial shade. Soil:  fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil. Rate of growth:  average Flowering period:  May to August Flower colour:  violet-blue. Hardiness:  fully hardy. Pretty violet-blue blooms are produced from May to August amongst heart-shaped, fresh green leaves. The large flowers have a slight veining and fine dark rays on the paler lower petals. Orginally called 'Broughton Blue', this vigorous variety looks gorgeous when used as a groundcover under roses or other deciduous shrubs. Garden care:  To minimise the risk of fungal diseases always use new, sterilised compost for container plants. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering.
