Perennials - N

Navelwort  £5.45

Position:   partial shade. Soil:  moist, moderately fertile, humus-rich soil. Rate of growth:  fast-growing Flowering period:  March and April. Hardiness:  fully hardy. Sprays of gentian-blue, star-shaped flowers with a pale lilac edge appear in March and April among heart-shaped, mid-green leaves. This fast-growing, evergreen perennial will quickly form a vivid carpet in areas between deciduous shrubs and trees. An excellent companion for ferns and other shade-loving woodland plants, it prefers moist, moderately fertile, humus-rich soil. Garden care:  Incorporate lots of well-rotted leafmould, composted pine needles or garden compost when planting. Lift and divide congested colonies in spring. Goes well with:  Pulmonaria officinalis 'Sissing. Hurst White', Athyrium felix-femina, Dicentra spectabilis 'Alba', Polygonatum odoratum, Sarcococca confusa, Viburnum opulus 'Compactum'

New England Aster  £5.95

Position:   full sun or partial shade. Soil:  well-cultivated, fertile, moist soil. Rate of growth:  average. Flowering period:  August to October. Hardiness:  fully hardy. A spectacular variety which from late summer through.  to autumn, bears a prolific display of fine-rayed violet-purple daisies. The needle-fine petals radiate from a central golden crown. A naturally tall plant, it is best grown through.  twiggy support to prevent unruly growth, providing a regal purple splash of colour to the back of the autumn border when many other perennials have finished flowering. Attractive to bees and butterflies. Garden care:  Stake with bamboo canes or brushwood in early spring. Water regularly during dry spells and deadhead to prolong flowering. After flowering cut the flowered stems to the ground and apply a generous mulch of well-rotted garden compost or horse manure around the base of the plant.

New Zealand Satin Flower  £5.95

Position:   full sun or light shade. Soil:  fertile, well-drained soil. Rate of growth:  average Flowering period:  May to July Flower colour:  white. Hardiness:  fully hardy. Reliable and long-lived perennial which provides attractive vertical accents to a planting. Sword like leaves encircle slender wiry stems. Simple pure white flowers open progressively up each stem to culminate in a fine airy show. Associates well with fine grasses like Stipa tenuissima in a gravel planting, or with simple daisies like Anthemis 'Sauce Hollandaise' in the front of a border. Garden care:  Selectively cut out old foliage to reveal attractive new growth. Dislikes a waterlogged soil. Divide congested plants in spring or autumn. Leave flower spikes to mature and form attractive seed heads which will self-seed if permitted.
